What time is best to have a photoshoot ( studio or outdoor) ?

Because timing can make all the difference (for them... and for you)

If you’re a parent, you already know: timing is everything. Especially when it comes to babies, toddlers, and young kids. So if you’re wondering when is the best time to schedule your family photoshoot—whether it’s in the studio or outside—you’re not alone. It’s one of the first questions most families ask, and it’s such an important part of setting everyone up for a relaxed, happy experience.

Let’s break it down…

1/ Studio Sessions: Flexible and Baby-Friendly

Best time: Late morning (between 10:00 - 12:00 am)

Babies and toddlers are usually at their best in the late morning—after they’ve eaten, had a nap (or are due for one after), and are still feeling fresh.

In-studio, we’re not relying on sunset light. I work with soft, natural lighting or gentle studio setups that feel cozy and calm. That means we have more flexibility to choose a time that works best for your family’s rhythm—especially helpful for newborns or little ones with set routines.

We can pause for feeds, take breaks when needed, and follow their lead every step of the way.

2/ Outdoor Sessions: When the Light & Moods Align

Best time: Golden hour (1 hour before sunset)

If we’re heading outdoors—whether it's a field, park, or beach—the most beautiful light happens just before sunset. That soft, golden glow you see in dreamy family photos? That’s golden hour. It’s flattering, warm, and makes everything feel more peaceful and connected.

But here's the key when photographing little ones: we plan around them too. If sunset is too late for your child’s bedtime, we’ll look at seasonal light and try to book during a time of year when golden hour is earlier ( March - April or September - October) . Spring and fall are especially ideal for this—mild weather, gorgeous colors, and earlier sunsets.

What matters most is finding the sweet spot where the light is beautiful and your child is rested, fed, and comfortable.

3/ A Quick Tip on Naps and Snacks

Whether we’re in the studio or outside, the best sessions happen when your little ones are:

  • Well-rested

  • Recently fed (bring snacks if they’re a bit older!)

  • Not rushed

I always build in buffer time so we’re never in a rush. The goal is to create a space where your child feels safe, curious, and themselves… because that’s when the magic happens.

Not Sure What Works for Your Family?

That’s where I come in. I’ll help you plan your session time based on your little one’s age, routine, and personality—so you don’t have to guess. Whether we’re chasing the sunset or keeping things calm in the studio, the experience will be tailored to you.

I capture your babies all year round in my Studio and outdoor between April to November. Reach out and let’s find the perfect time to tell your family’s story.

Much love, Claire xx
