6 Tips to Get Your Kids Ready for an Outdoor Sunset Photoshoot
Because the best photos come from happy, relaxed little humans
If you’re a parent, you already know—kids have a rhythm all their own. And when it comes to family photos, especially outdoors at sunset, a little prep can go a long way in helping everyone feel calm, comfortable, and ready to connect.
Here are five simple ways to help set your kids up for success before your sunset session… and make sure the whole experience feels easy, not stressful.
1/ Make sure they’re rested and fed (even if it’s early dinner time)
Sunset sessions usually take place 90min to 60 min before sunset, so around dinnertime or just before bed, depending on the time of year. A little snack beforehand—or even a light early meal—can make a huge difference in mood and energy. Think full bellies, happy hearts.
And if a nap is part of your little one’s day, try to adjust it if needed. Even a short rest can go a long way!
2/ Talk about it like an adventure, not a photoshoot
Instead of saying “We’re going to take pictures,” try something like: “We’re going to play in a field while a friend takes pictures of us having fun!”
Kids respond so much better when they know it’s going to be relaxed and play-based—not full of rules or stiff posing.
You can even show them a few of my photos beforehand so they know what to expect!
3/ Dress them in something they feel good in
Of course we want them to look adorable, but comfort is key. If something feels itchy, tight, or unfamiliar, kids might start to fuss. Choose soft, breathable fabrics or cosy knitwear, in neutral colours that complement your palette—and bring a backup outfit just in case.
Think: natural textures, cozy layers, and bare feet (during summer) if they’re up for it.
4/ Bring comfort items just in case
A favourite blanket, soft toy or their favourite teddy can work wonders if they need a moment to reset. Sometimes, just knowing they can bring their special thing (even if it doesn’t make it into the photos) is enough.
5/ Let go of perfection and lean into connection
This one’s for you, mama (or dad!)—kids are beautifully unpredictable. And that’s okay. The goal isn’t a perfect photo. It’s a real moment of your family being together, just as you are right now. So I always recommend to have zero expectations.
If someone gets silly, rolls in the grass, or decides they only want to be held… that’s all part of the story. And it often leads to the most meaningful photos.
6/ Have their pyjamas ready in the car
After the session, you can put them straight into their pj’s so it’s an easier transition when you are back home.
One late night won’t significantly disrupt your child’s routine, but it will provide you with beautiful, lasting memories. So, take a deep breath, relax, and let the magic of the golden hour unfold.
I’ll guide you the entire time. You don’t have to manage the chaos or make sure everyone is smiling. You just have to show up, breathe, and love on your people.
I’ll take care of the rest.
If you resonate with this type of session, let’s make it happen.
