My 5 go-to natural poses for a Newborn photoshoot

If you are about to book your newborn photoshoot and wonder what kind of poses are best for the newborn, continue reading.

My style is minimal, simple and natural, which means no poses will ever be forced on your baby. All my sessions are baby-led and I will go with baby’s flow.

I have a workflow I follow during my sessions, which I can easily adapt depending on how baby feels during the session.

Here are my 5 go-to poses I like to do in most of my sessions ( depending on baby’s behaviour and how old they are):

1/ Baby in your partner’s arms

We can do this pose either standing up or seated on my sofa. We will put baby in your arms and you just need to hold baby’ s head in your hands.

I shoot backlit, into my window.

We can get more close-up photos when I ask you to touch baby’s nose with your nose !

2/ Family portrait with newborn

I do this pose while your partner is holding baby. It looks fabulous without a blanket, with just a bloomer or a little romper on baby. I always like it when we see their skin and baby rolls.

Baby is either facing me, either facing your partner. We use hands to hold baby’s head and I will ask mummy to come close to baby or kiss him.

3/ Heart shape pose

A truly classic pose. We position baby between you two, super cosy, and I ask you to touch each other foreheads.

Baby can rest his head either on Mummy’s chest or Daddy’s chest, whichever we prefer, but I think I like it when I have both Mummy and baby on the same side.

4/ Tummy pose

We lay baby on the bean bag on their tummy. We can position their little hands underneath their cheek ( if they let us do it !).

We can use a blanket to keep them warm too or show off the rolls.

It ‘s a great pose to do a lot of variety as I will add then the parents one by one. I love to ask one of you to slide their hand under baby’s face and scoop their head with the other hand. It’s so gorgeous, as they nestled into your hands.

5/ Back pose

Simple and effective, a lot can happen in this pose. If baby is awake, I can get a wink if I am lucky or a lot of yawing and stretches. They like to look at my camera as it’s black and they can see the contrast.

6/ Womb pose

Okay I know the article says my 5 go-to poses, but I have started doing this womb pose recently, and I absolutely love it !!

It works very well for very young newborn. This little boy below was only 7 days old. We can recreate the pose they had in the womb, being all curled up. It is also ideal to take the macro photos at the same time (close-ups) as they are deeply asleep and don’t move.
