What to wear to your family photoshoot ?
Wether you have already booked your family session or you still hesitate, you might be wondering what should we all wear to our photoshoot ? This is one of the most challenging thing about photoshoot, because what you will wear will really influence the result between good photos and GREAT photos you will love forever.
What colours to choose ?
That’s why you should rely on your photographer !
I have a colour palette I would highly recommend to follow if you love my style and chose me for that. This way, you will be sure to have photos that look like my portfolio and what I share on social media. I am a natural light photographer and I specialise in neutral & timeless photos.
My colour palette is about colours that look very neutral, light, airy and timeless.
Colours that look great : white, cream, beige, grey, muted pinks and blue, denim.
Ideally no more than 3 different colours in total when we look at all of you.
My go-to colour and favourite remains White just so you know !
Should you all match ?
The short answer is NO ! But then it depends which style we are trying to achieve. For instance if Mum is wearing a blue jean and white top and her little boy is wearing the same, then that’s very cute for some specific poses.
I would recommend you to choose Mum outfit first and then decide what everybody else is wearing according to her style.
You can add texture and layer to add some dimensions to the photos and not be all wearing the same.
Some example below of what I mean (these are not my photos, this is only for inspiration using Pinterest).
So as I said it’s good for some specific poses with just Mum or just Dad with kids, it looks perfect.
It doesn’t look as good if the entire family is matching, for instance below all in denim (too much blue kill the blue). Personally, I think it doesn’t work as well (not my photo, it’s for inspiration using Pinterest).
Things to avoid when choosing an outfit
Don't wear neon bright colours, stripes, patterns or logos and remove everything in your pockets ( Dad, that’s for you !!).
Keep accessories to a very minimum.
Keep make-up & nail polish natural and if possible, avoid fake tan (I can’t guarantee I will achieve the same result as my usual editing style if you are too orange sorry).
Take off your watch before the shoot so it doesn’t leave a mark on your skin. Watches can be very distracting on a close-up photo.
Some example here of what to avoid (this is not my photo, but inspiration from Pinterest) . If you are really into this type of clothes for your family photoshoot, we are not the right fit sorry, please don’t book a photoshoot with me !
So what does look good ?
Some example below of some of my clients, wearing their own clothes or some of my dresses from my client’s wardrobe.
This is aligned to my colour palette and my style, so it’s perfect and will be timeless.
Where can I shop for neutral colour clothes ?
I have a Styling guide for my clients, which you will receive after you have booked your session.
Mums are welcome to use my client’s wardrobe. I also have a few pieces for babies & kids up to 3 years old ish. I have nothing for Dads at the moment.
So I usually recommend to shop in Zara, Mango, H&M, Mamas and Papas. They have beautiful outfit that will work perfectly.
A few example below.
